Here’s a new update for my project at school. The assignment was to make a visual story.

Web 2.0 is the business revolution in the computer industry caused by the move to the Internet as a platform, and an attempt to understand the rules of success on that new platform.

Nowadays, everyone knows and is talking about the World Wide Web. From Web 1.0 to Web 2.0 and now even Web 3.0 has been mentioned. But what do they exactly mean?

Let me start of from the very beginning, Web 1.0. This web is known as the period where the WWW got familiar with the public. It is the so called ‘new economy’ with the many new ‘dotcom-companies’. These old traditional websites are the sort which limited visitors to viewing and whose content only the site’s owner could modify.

Around 2001, after the collapsing of the internet bubble, it was the end for Web 1.0 and Web 2.0 was introduced. O’Reilly and John Battelle summarized the meanings of Web 2.0 in the first conference. Web 2.0 stands for interconnectivity and interactivity of web-delivered content. They argued that ‘the web had become a platform, with software above the level of a single device, leveraging the power of the Long Tail, and with data as a driving force.’ All users can participate and create network effects. Web 2.0 technologies stands for innovation of different systems and sites. O’Reilly gave some examples of companies/websites that embodies the description of Web 2.0: eBay, Wikipedia, Skype, del.icio.us, Flickr, Facebook, MySpace and YouTube.

YouTube is a good current example. Web 2.0 websites allow users to do more than just retrieve information. They can build on the interactive facilities of Web 1.0 and exercise control. Users are encouraged to add value to the application ad they use it (adding your own films on YouTube, responding to other films you have seen on the site). It is very user-friendly. Bart Decrem, founder and former of ‘Flock’, calls Web 2.0 ‘the participatory Web’ and regards the ‘Web-as-information-source’ as Web 1.0.

So what is Web 3.0 then? Web 3.0 has been described so far (it does not exist yet) as the evolutionary stage of the Web that follows Web 2.0. It refers to aspects of the internet which are not technically or practically possible at this time. Web 1.0 was “read-only”,  Web 2.0 is “read-write”, and Web 3.0 will be “read-write-execute”.

SNSs, such as MySpace and Facebook, have attracted millions of users. Most sites exists of the already existing social networks, but other help strangers to connect based on common thoughts, ideas, interests, political views, activities etc. Some of them have a wide range of audiences, while others have an audience with common similarities. Besides connecting us with people we know, or extend our network of private contacts, it also greatly helps to extend our network of professional contacts. They provide PR experts to get in touch with reporters and journalists from old and new media. The content of these sites consist of new information and communication tools, such as mobile connectivity, blogging (like this weblog) and photo/video-sharing. For the Dutch bloggers: Hyves is a good example. Overall, social network sites have become more and more familiar to every age group. How to use?

Subscribe to MySpace, Facebook or Hyves (for the 20 something generation), or Linkedln (for more settled professionals) and create and manage your own social network. Once you have created an account, you will start to design your own profile. Add contact information about yourself, upload your own profile photo and maybe add some more photos to different albums. As you add more contacts and you are able to see the contacts of your own contacts, you will find some very useful people as well. Maybe if you are interested in modeling, you might find a useful contact through another contact (termed “friends”).

I have an account on MySpace, Facebook and Hyves. Hyves is a social networking site which is very familiar to Dutch people. It started a few years ago and now has already more than 1,5 billion users. Words as “hyves” and “krabbels” (Dutch word for leaving a note) are now considered to be official words and are reckoned in the “Dikke van Dale” dictionary. Besides Hyves, I also subscribed for MySpace, but that is only to check updates on different sites from musicians. Before I started travelling, I did not hear of Facebook before. This is a very international social network site. Now I have many contacts, and still find new contacts who I have met more than a year ago. It is a great solution to keep in contact with everyone all over the world and each other’s stories about their lives.
